INTENSIVE STUDY PROGRAM IN BHARATANATYAM FOR PROFESSIONAl DANCERS
THE INTENTION OF MOVEMENT
The December intensive is intended for the advanced student of Bharatanatyam . This intensive caters to the serious practitioner who intends to pursue the form as a profession. The intensive presumes a prior understanding of Tala, and Carnatic compositions. It also presumes an understanding of basic Bharatanatyam theory and history.
The students will work extensively with Guru Rukmini Vijayakumar in body conditioning, honing their technique and understanding of choreography. The intensive is physically rigorous and intellectually challenging. It pushes the boundaries of what we understand as movement within the context of the Bharatanatyam vocabulary. The intensive will also work on developing ideas, choreography and finding avenues of expression within the classical medium. The intensive accepts participants by invitation only.
The intensive is structured as a deeper study of Bharatanatyam and movement for an advanced student. Each day starts with body conditioning and technique classes. Along with the repertoire and abhinaya classes, the intensive works on developing the movement quality of a student.
The intensive will work on the following areas of Bharatanatyam and movement study:
Body Conditioning (By Rukmini Vijayakumar)
The daily body conditioning routine uses elements of Yoga, Pilates and Cardio to build strength, improve flexibility and stamina. It includes a warm-up and strength routine specific for Bharatanatyam dancers. This also involves isolations as prescribed by Natyashastra. The isolations (Angas and Upangas) will be learnt along with the study of Slokas describing them.
Alignment & Technique (By Rukmini Vijayakumar)
Everyday, the student will work on general alignment and alignment and musculature of holding the araimandi. The technique is refined with a basic adavu class, alignment of adavus and isolations.
Rhythm & Choreography (By Rukmini Vijayakumar)
This session will help in guiding the student through the development of ideas into performance choreography. It will deal with finding freedom within the Bharatanatyam vocabulary and will help in harnessing the potential of creative expression within the form.
Movement Dynamics & Intention of Movement (By Guru Rukmini Vijayakumar)
The intensive will work on the spatial and body awareness of a Bharatanatyam dancer by working on aspects of the Dynamic of Movement, Intention of Movement, translating dynamic to intention, traversing through space etc. This would help bring about a difference in the way a dancer effectively speaks through his/her body as he/she will be able to imbibe a definite quality into each movement and a purpose to each action on stage.
Contemporary Movement (By Nakula Somana)
An introduction to contemporary movement, this session will deal with exploring an alternate movement vocabulary to physically and artistically challenge a classically trained student’s perception of space and physical boundaries. This segment should help break inhibitions and free-up movement, helping the student explore and push boundaries of physical movement.
Theatrical Aspects of Dance (By Rukmini Vijayakumar & Anmol Vellani)
The dancers will be introduced to story and character building through various exercises. A session by eminent teacher and theatre artiste Anmol Vellani will deal with “Motivation, Focus and Action”. These sessions will help the dancer break down situations and understand the motivation and ideas behind building a performance piece.
Abhinaya Technique (By Rukmini Vijayakumar)
The students will be taught Abhinaya Technique and introduced to the four aspects of abhinaya. The abhinaya sessions which will be held on the last three days of the intensive will encourage the students to draw from the learnings in various other sessions in the intensive (movement dynamics, story building, intention of movement etc.).
Repertoire (By Rukmini Vijayakumar)
The repertoire will involve a conceptual piece that is developed over the course of the intensive. The aspects of Choreography learnt throughout the intensive i.e., Tala, Rhythm & Choreography, Movement Dynamics, Character Building and Abhinaya are drawn upon to create an original piece using Bharatanatyam vocabulary. All the while being mindful of the alignment and technique practiced everyday.
